A Poem A Day with Nico Dockx

In 1997, I suddenly, surprisingly found this image A Poem A Day, these four words, these small noises … this work without compromise, on the inside of an empty cardboard box I had recycled from a garbage container next to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. I used this box to wrap and protect some books I had bought at the museum shop before returning home. Since then, this image, like a snow globe collection of memories I didn’t know I had —or never knew I would remember—spontaneously started to grow into a set of responsive situations where you feel something is touching, where you make something possible. This awareness of time and space, that comes about because you didn’t expect it, molds performative sculptures of permanent breathing in search of what cannot be found —like this experience of being on a road that is not a road.
